Birthday Post

I realized I haven’t posted in a while, so thought I’d better do so, but won’t make it long, because it’s my birthday and I want to go home, take a shower and work on a piece I need to write about a Finger Lakes restaurant that uses local produce. It’s been hot here on the farm in the last week, and there’s been a lot of this:

Wallow

and this:

Basil's Wallow

but also quite a few of these:

Poppy

which bloomed unexpectedly in the yard, and one or two of these:

Sunset

Beautiful week, actually. Everyone’s doing well, from calves to ducklings to turkeys, except that one turkey died (par for the course, I guess) and one broiler hen. Five piglets were sold today and screamed rather disturbingly while being taken away. A highland cow is in heat (the only one who’s not pregnant) and is also making disturbing noises. Other than that, though, all is well in our little utopia. The area around the strawbale house is more beautiful than ever, and we can see some of it better because Nathan did us a huge favor and scythed part of our yard, since our rotary mower won’t work on grass almost above our heads that’s gone to seed.

Off home! Happy birthday to me!

happy birthday Bekah! I’m so enjoying your writing. Almost every noun and verb you use to record the details of your daily life are words that I rarely get to use (e.g. “scythe” and “seed” as either noun or verb, also, “utopia”). So fascinating!
